1. Men to men = 1st skill to learn
It is important to let the kids discover the game in mini-handball as well junior varsity. To do this introduce the game at 3 vs 3 plus goalkeeper or 4 vs 4 plus goalkeeper.
2. Reduce space and time
By denying the ball to the wingers, lateral backs will be force to use a dribble and slow down their attack.
3. Forcing the attack on 2/3 of the zone
Men to men (adaptive to the position of the ball) is a good choice to cut 1/3 (the center) of the zone.
4. Playing 5-1 defense
It is good choice of defence, when the opponent team has strong backs that shoot from outside the 9 meters line
5. Collaboration defender and goalkeeper
It is an asset when your goalkeeper communicates with the defense. The defender must force the shot in 1 side of the goal or block the shot.
6-0 defense - pay attention the way the pivot is marked.
6. Stealing the ball
Defender No. 1 reads the situation (pivot on right side) and anticipates the pass at the right back.
7. Play wide and deep
Wide means that the offense will setup the wingers in order to stretch the defense
Deep means that the offense will setup an outside 9 meters shot from the back or winger shooting as a back
8. 2nd goalkeeper's job
(on the bench)
You can adjust your defense according to the efficiency of the opponent or your goalie's ability.
Each area are recorded
Top 3L, 3C, 3R
Middle 2L, 2C,2R
Bottom 1L, 1C, 1R
Player #5 - 3L - G = Shot top corner Left side and Goal
If your team is the minor league, it is possible that your 2nd goalkeeper takes stats.
It is important NOT only to figure the efficiency of the shooters but also to figure the preferences of the shooters.
9. Who goes on 7meters throw ?
It is important to have at least 1 excellent shooter on penalty shot. During the practice, I use to pick my best right handed shooter and my best left handed shooter. If you don't know, you must practice at least 10 min on penalty shots and plan who will take the penalty shot.
10. Play all players
The goalkeeper of the yellow team is on the bench. We add an extra player on offense. It is important to plan the attack in order to send 1 player on the bench BEFORE the shot in order to have the goalkeeper back in the net (before the opponent takes possession of ball).
Notice at 33 seconds on the video-clip, the referee forgot to call passive play (slow substitution on Team BLUE).
11. Number of players on the bench
Rule 4: A team consists of up to 14 players. A team is allowed to use a maximum of 4 team officials (coach, assistants, trainer etc) during the game
Some leagues may allow more than 14 players. If you do have more than 14 players, make sure they ALL PLAY during the game. Having too many players could create bad experiences to some players and limit the optimal performance of your team.
12. When to call time-out
You are allowed 1 time-out per period. It is important to apply the K.I.S.S. (Keep your Instructions Simples and Structured).
Use VISUAL on your board.
13. Fast-break strategies
It is important that your STRATEGY fits the skills of your players.
14. Throw off strategies
Chineese player bring the ball in the middle, create a simple overload (4 vs 3) for the right winger.
15. 60 to 75% of goals are done with just a great execution of techniques. 25-40% of goals are done with strategies at 2-4 players.
Mathias Gidzel = The best handball technician in the World. He can score from every where on the court.
16. Avoid passive play
Well explain the PASSIVE PLAY RULE.
17. Increase efficiency - change style
The coach always keep track of efficiency.
You MUST HAVE more than 58% efficiency
After 4 offences you should have at least 50% success. If your efficiency is below 50%, you must aim at a strategy that will elevate your efficiency.
Examples: looking at a Fast-break (0,79), or break-through (0,62 - 0,66) or your best effective winger (0,63).
Changing the defense, is the key: You will try to lower the opponent's efficiency and attack quickly before the opponent organize their defense.
You may put your best 1 on 1 (breakthrough) offensive player against the best scorer of of the opponent's team, hoping a defensive fault would create a 7 meters and progressive punishment.
You must had prepared at least 5 strategies 6 vs 6 or 7 vs 6 that you will use in the second period to improve your offense.
Be prepared to the men to men full court. Avoid having your goalkeeper stepping out of the crease. Any defensive foul in the last 30 sec. will cost you a progressive punishment and 7 meters.
From IHF Symposium 2021 Paul Landuré
18. Penalty kill
Japan plays 3-3 defense. Notice the synchronised movements of the 3 defenders forcing Brasil to work hard on offense.
Brasil pulled their goalkeeper for a 6 vs 6. Brasil tries to keep possession of the ball while Japan uses quick attack and fast-break with success. The defense always change to adapt to the offense. In this defense, you notice that the 3 defenders outside 9 m are forcing the offense to catch the ball outside 11 meters and move backward to cover inside the 9 meters zone when the gets closer to the 9 meters.
19. Powerplay
Powerplay is when the offensive team has MORE players than the defense. It is normal to see, the best teams pulling their goalkeeper to gain advantage of 7 vs 6.
One of these 2 players must replace the goalkeeper in case of a save.
The best teams in the World have strategies so we PLAN in case of failure prior the shot.
20. Specials situation eg: Free-throw play
The game is FAST. Passive play is a judgment from the referees. Plan ahead that you may need several free-throw plays in case your offense is hesitating on offense.
